What is the difference between an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) & a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC):
Certification and Training:
IBCLC: IBCLCs undergo extensive training, typically including healthcare and lactation-specific education. They must pass a rigorous international exam and accrue clinical hours to become certified. This certification is recognized globally.
CLC: CLCs also receive training but typically through shorter courses, often lasting a few days or weeks. The CLC certification program focuses on basic lactation support and counseling.
Scope of Practice:
IBCLC: IBCLCs have a broader scope of practice. They are qualified to handle complex breastfeeding issues, including medical conditions, latch problems, and breastfeeding difficulties in both mothers and babies. They can develop comprehensive care plans and work closely with healthcare providers.
CLC: CLCs primarily provide basic breastfeeding support and counseling. They can assist with common breastfeeding challenges, provide education on breastfeeding techniques, and offer emotional support to breastfeeding families.
In summary, IBCLCs are highly trained certified lactation experts with a wide scope of practice, while CLCs are valuable for providing breastfeeding support and counseling in more basic situations. Both play important roles in supporting breastfeeding families, with IBCLCs often handling more complex cases.
